14 Days ‘til Halloween: Trick or Twinkie? - Giving cupcakes on Halloween

God bless simple progress: a slice of cheese on a burger, mustard on a hot dog or Old Bay on fries. Take something great and make it better by a sensible addition.

Cupcake maker Hostess is trying to do the same with Halloween treats. Sort of.

The company that makes Twinkies, Cup Cakes, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, Sno Balls and more is holding its Hulked Out Halloween this year and trying desperately to get someone to buy baked goods decorated with pictures of the Hulk giving away a million dollars to a patient lucky contestant who must be giving away Hostess products when their prize patrol pulls up, unannounced, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. Homes must enter and register to be eligible.

Seen in the Suburbs: There used to be a Starbucks right there

Philly EDGE mourns the passing of the Starbucks located on Easton Road and Fitzwatertown Road in Willow Grove, which will close Wednesday, Oct. 22.

You are not seeing things. The band has been around the city preparing to depart for Wilkes-Barre this weekend. Cover tribute to the Phillies

It is NOT a band (though give it enough time and there will be a Phillies tribute band that covers only the songs that play when the Phils come to the plate.)

No, the fine gents at Hugging Harold Reynolds put together this assortment of local newspaper covers, that commemorated the Phils National League championship in ink Thursday morning.

Bucks County residents split on Phils World Series foe (but LOVE ice cream)

The Bucks County Courier’s NOW blog talks to fans and asks their preferred World Series opponent: Boston Red Sox or Tampa Bay Rays. One respondent prefers ice cream bars. Perhaps he is convinced the Phils can beat the frozen dairy treat in, say, five games. (A.L. has home field, after all.)

Abington voters: 'I'm not racist, but my neighbor might be.'

Wednesday night's Debate About the Debate at Penn State Abington, starring Larry "Citizen" Kane of CN8, turned up some interesting and insightful impressions about suburban Philadelphia voters, who in a few short weeks will...

Your Thursday: Oktoberfest at Drake, Magicians in NE Philly and Preston & Steve in Feasterville

Hit up the Drake Tavern, Jenkintown for its Oktoberfest tonight. Pig roast and then $1 Miller Lite bottles from 10 p.m.- 12 a.m.

Parkour is NOT the last name of an Eagles linebacker

That would be Juqua Parker, who helped seal last Sunday’s victory over the 49ers with a pick returned for a touchdown.

BUT… Parkour, on the other hand, is a free-form physical activity by which one attempts to move from place to place in the most efficient, human manner. Think free running meets gymnastics meets tae kwon do in an obstacle course littered with balance beams.

Still time to get that gift: Today, Oct. 16, is National Boss Day

No, not this Boss (though Springsteen and Billy Joel AND Philly ex-pat John Legend are playing a benefit show in New York for Barack Obama tonight).

If no one was wild in the streets of your neighborhood after 11:30 p.m. last night…

…you should seriously consider moving. That goes for both the suburbs and the city (totally looking at you Newtown, Chestnut Hill and Radnor). We're talking car horns honking well past 2 a.m. and random strangers high-fiving at Wawa in Glenside, Abington, EVEN Doylestown.

The Best of ‘The Night the Phillies Won the National League’ (more through all of these links)

At Frankford and Cottman in NE Philly. Wow. Just WOW.

at Temple University

Broad Street

More Broad Street

West Chester (very Silence of the Lambs)

‘We play all 27 outs. That is how it is.’

Damn right, Cholly, damn right.

Your Wed.: The Phillies go for the clincher in L.A., Betsy Ross House and Eagles Cheerleaders at Manny Brown’s in Neshaminy

The Phillies vs. the Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Fox at 8:22 p.m. You will watch this instead of the presidential debate. Everyone knows it. Find a bar where you can watch the game, here. If you go to a bar and they are not showing the Phils game, leave that bar. Consider never going back.

Track of the Week: “My Kid Smokin’” by And The Moneynotes

Even before Scranton’s And the Moneynotes showed up all featured and such on Daytrotter, Philly EDGE was happy to have swilled beer with a few of the gents, some of whom were also in now-defunct Okay Paddy.

Phillies World Series tickets…NOT

Oh Phillies: Why do you taunt so?

You simply can’t send Philly EDGE an e-mail with a subject line of:
“Phillies postseason ticket opportunity” and then this…

Sarah Palin used the Rocky song, Lee Greenwood on campaign trail

Good. God. This is what the front lines of a culture war look like.

Understandably, the media has been drawn to the events before Republican vice-presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin’s stump speech in Scranton yesterday (Scranton Times-Tribune)

Phillies Ball Girl Tryouts: (Insert your own girls-handling-Phillies-balls joke here)

Credit the Phils for taking the current media opportunity and running with it. The team is looking for ballgirls “who can represent the organization in media situations as well as perform duties on the field” for the 2009 season.

Resumes are being accepted until October 24. Those qualified will be invited to the tryout, scheduled for November at Citizens Bank Park.

Music News: XPN’s 885 Essential Songs, The Dead in State College and revisiting the death of Montco native Nancy Spungen

[ ]    WXPN-FM (88.5) starts counting down the 885 Essential XPN Songs Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. through October 23.
To mark the event, WXPN  bites off Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues via video with on-air Jim McGuinn (right) and program director Bruce Warren, left.

Your Tuesday: Talk Cinema, Danzig and eating at the Trolley Car

Talk Cinema – see a movie prior to theatrical release –   at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (Bryn Mawr): 7 p.m.

Booze news: Local beers win awards at Great American Beer Festival and many suburban beer events this weekend

[   ]   Cementing its reputation as a beer haven, the Philadelphia region took home a bevy of awards at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this past weekend.

Political Update: Barack Obama likes him some pie, you too can run for President and Horsham hearts Hillary

[ ]   At his appearance at the Mayfair Diner in NE Philly this past Saturday, Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) mentioned pie. A lot.

First, the Wild Card ties the game with a two-run HR , THEN this...

Philly fans are so tough…they even boo at the opera

The Opera Company of Philadelphia began its 2008-09 season with a production of Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Academy of Music this past weekend.

No Money, No Problem: Cheap Phils and Eagles jerseys, Cheap Stingy Bargains, and a 42 in. flatscreen for $700

[   ]    So, after six weeks time, maybe you find yourself completely convinced that Eagles rookie WR DeSean Jackson is indeed the real deal… or you were so impressed by noted blogger Phillies OF Shane Victorino’s head-pointing in Game 3 of the NLCS that you simply MUST get yourself one of his jerseys to wear.

Your Monday: The Dead in State College, the Phils and Jazz open mic in Ardmore

The Dead – play a rally for Barack Obama  – at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College: Check State College CL for tix.

Terror Behind the Walls – ‘haunted attraction experience at Eastern State Penitentiary

Phils Watching: Cheap beer, hot dogs and protein shakers at the Keswick Tavern in Glenside

Philly EDGE does love us some Keswick Tavern (Easton Rd. and Keswick Ave. Glenside). Large windows, high ceilings, cheap eats, BIG screens and you are thisclose to the Keswick Theatre. (Close enough to drink with Alison Moyet and her band after a show (Oct. 12). Fwiw- we saw two English guys order Budweiser when they could have had Harp, Guinness or Boddington’s.)

News to Reuse: I CAN HAS NO HOUSE, man attacked at ‘burbs bar and the Banco Santander Arena?

[   ]   Pet abandonment -— particularly, cat dumping — has gotten so bad in certain areas of Lower Bucks County that the local Women's Humane Society is posting warning signs along major streets.  (Courier Times)

Hillary to Horsham, McCain to Blue Bell; Obama: Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair…(Like to meet his tailor)

[   ]   Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) made four stops in Philadelphia Saturday. Philly EDGE freelance photog Brian Hineline caught him at the Mayfair Diner on Frankford Ave.

Britney Spears is naked in her new video

via MTV.

It was only a matter of time. New song is called "Womanizer" off Circus.

They weren’t booing. They were just saying 'MOOOOOOOse burger': Sarah Palin at the Flyers opener.

Republican vice-presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, allegedly because she’s such a great ambassador of hockey, dropped the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers opener on Saturday night. Results were muted only because she had her two daughters, the Flyers and the Flyers Ultimate Hockey Mom contest winner with her mixed. At best. (700 Level)
