Phaces of the Week: March 10-14

3. New Philly skyscraper: City Paper already planning
Skyscraper Madness for 2011.

2. Hillary Clinton: And we didn’t even mention that you have to

Weekend planner: All the movies still suck and everybody’s Irish this weekend

[ ]   Philly EDGE is not sure why you’d even consider going to the movies this weekend. Opening in theatres near you (as opposed to the recommended films here, which will prolly not be near you):

Doomsday: Like The Road Warrior without the Jew-hater.

Horton Hears a Who: Jim Carrey continues to morph into Jerry Lewis meets Robin Williams. We expect him to host a telethon for hirsute rehab patients any year now.

Never Back Down: Dude, just hold auditions for a fucking remake of The Karate Kid and be done with it. Ralph Macchio is not busy; Pat Morita, on the other hand, is dead.

Soap Dogg? Snoop to guest on One Life to Live

Further killing all sense of importance that hip-hop still has (if any), former porn director pee-wee football coach gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg will appear on upcoming episodes of One Life To Live, the ABC daytime soap opera based in a fictional Philly suburb. Yes, he will perform. (AP via Google)

Philly EDGE Scrapple: Flyers fan goes nuts, Shmitten Kitten and ‘I blog, therefore I suck’?

This week’s leftover scraps…

Philly Sports Backwash
[ ]   After the Flyers dropped their second in a row to the Maple Leafs Wednesday night, a caller to Glen Macnow’s show on WIP-AM (610) got a little fired up.

Local Hottie of the Day

5

On the heels of this post yesterday (dancing Amber!), we figured we might as well give this tidbit its own home:

A Holland (Bucks County) man is scouring the region for hot girls (like the young lady to the right) to interview, profile, defile, solicit, etc. for this website.

News to reuse: National Potato Chip Day, say Rupert Holmes told you to escape… and how many plants can you get for $200,000?

[ ]   Campaign update: A debate between Senators Barack Obama (D- Ill.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) is set for the Constitution Center in Philly on April 16. (AP via Philebrity)… Michelle Obama raised the roof at Abington High School yesterday. (Intelligencer)

Philly Sports Backwash: Name that puppy, a real Phils preview and where’s Ed Pinckney when you need him?

[ ]   Obviously trying to horn in on all the clamor over the unnamed Bucks emu, the Double-A Trenton Thunder, who are thinking about fielding an entire team of just mascots, are having a contest to name the team’s latest addition, a puppy born to the club’s Golden Retriever, Chase.

Club News: Hot girls, Reed’s tonight, new club in Southampton and ‘burbs Bunny loose at SXSW

[ ]    Here’s a quick plea to get you to vote for former Philly EDGE cover model Amber Stratton at College Mansion.com.  There are other Philly-area girls involved in the 2008 Mansion Madness hottest college girl contest as well (Briana and Christy), but they were never on our cover.

AAARGH! Madness overkill!!! …sigh….Philly EDGE worries that one day everything will be decided by bracket format tournaments and that if it comes down to the Best Condiment, far too many people like ketchup more than mustard…. And we really like mustard.
Oh - and do, by all means, watch Amber dance to The Divinyls. The video is safe-for-work, but best not tempt yourself like that, ‘kay?

[ ]   Plenty of single people will be in Blue Bell tonight when Preston & Steve host one of their Desperately Single mixers at Reed’s (Rt. 202 and 73). It’s invite-only from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. but go after 9 p.m. when all the eligibles are liquored up and ready.

[ ]  The man struck and killed by an Amtrak train on SEPTA’s R7 line near Croydon Station earlier this week may have been at Brady’s Irish Pub II prior to the accident. (Courier Times)

[ ]  Tigersharks (727 2nd Street Pike, Southampton; 215.953.SHRK), a new club scheduled to open later this spring in Bucks County, is now looking to staff its operation.

[ ]   The funniest bald man in America, Paul Mooney, is set to appear through Saturday at Helium in Philly. (Impresario)
We mean haha funny, not funny like this guy.
Since we’re talking funny business, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Emily Murphy of Pottstown show up on the Helium stage one of these days. The George Washington University student is part of the school’s comedy team that will compete next Wednesday in the semi-finals of the RooftopComedy First Annual National College Comedy Competition.
"I'm just trying to keep my focus these days," says Murphy, 20, who was also recently named one of D.C.'s funniest college students in another competition. For her Rooftop performance she had to cut her five-minute routine down to three, "which wasn't easy!"

Murphy, a member of GW's improvisational comedy group Recess, says her parents actually are happy about her budding career as a stand-up comic.

"I want to go in the Peace Corps, but my dad says I'm going to New York and Hollywood instead," she says.

[ ] ‘Burbs resident Shannon James, you know her best as Playboy’s Miss May 2007, is set to help host the Playboy party at SXSW in Austin (Texas) tonight. There are plenty of Philadelphians out there; she is the hottest. By. Far.

(Those links are work-safe, but don’t go too far...)

News to reuse: Do you have Mike Schmidt in a bottle? Hillary=Santorum, and adequate parking in Newtown

[ ]   Yesterday, Phoodie.info let us know about the new Pierre Robert wine; today a press release lets us know that Hall of Fame Phillies 3B Mike Schmidt is launching his own wine label.

Philly Sports Backwash: Philly college basketball alive and well, high schools too, NFL Films not-so-much

[ ]   Dept. of We Meant to Post This Yesterday, But Now It’s Better:  Mount Laurel-based NFL Films cut nearly 10 percent of its workers this week. (BurlCo Times)

…and now there’s this incredible take of how late NFL Films/Philly TV guy John Facenda (think “frozen tundra”) might have narrated the layoffs courtesy of Kissing Suzy Kolber. In Facenda’s voice…

                       UNEMPLOYMENT...

The very word conjures images of stumblebums, have-nots, Top Ramen and public library internet users. But on this day, it finds itself swaddled around the chroniclers of gladiators and philosopher-kings.

Under the forbidding skies of a cold, harsh March morn, National Football League Films head man Steve Sabol did meet with 21 of his compatriots for a fateful announcement that would forever change the course of history…. (more)

Salt and pepper on the campaign trail: Hillary Clinton has a pizza

Yesterday, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary “I am Sorta from Scranton1” Clinton (D-N.Y.) made a campaign stop in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The former first lady, who won’t forget NEPA if elected2, peppered her speech at a rally at Scranton High School with local references tossed betwixt campaign rhetoric.
