Philly Sports Backwash: IronPigs and RiverSharks make us want to change our style to PhillyEdge; think of MuDvAyNe

We Serve Minors: Since the Phils won’t be back ‘til July 4, Philly EDGE thought it might be a good week to highlight the other (Minor League) teams that play in the Philadelphia area.

(Special Venomous Non-Sequitur: The Phils play the Rangers in Texas this weekend. We hate the fucking state of Texas. We’d trade Mexico that sonafabitch for the Baja Peninsula any day. )

Tuesday, June 24: Trenton Thunder

Wednesday, June 25: Reading Phillies

Thursday, June 26: Wilmington Blue Rocks

Friday, June 27: Lehigh Valley IronPigs

The Phillies Triple-A affiliate is fortunate enough to play just far enough away from Philadelphia that fans can’t really discuss how awful they have been in their first year in Allentown… the team is 20 games under .500 and has not beaten the top three teams in the their own division (tonight’s opponent Syracuse, Pawtucket and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) ever. Period.

BUT, because the team is new, Coca-Cola Park is nice and because of pretty much offering fireworks, bobble heads and a shot at seeing Anna  Benson (right) this Sunday when her husband Kris starts for the team, the Pigs are managing to draw plenty of fans.

Sat.-Sun. June 28-29: Camden RiverSharks

Much like Trenton, but somehow worse, Camden has an awful rep when it comes to being a “destination.” Truth is Campbell’s Field is a well done minor venue with a view, albeit from the Jersey side of the Delaware, that at least one damn Philadelphia stadium should have had.

..sigh..

Anyway, this weekend the independent RiverSharks will host a three-game set with the Newark Bears, with the clear must-go being Saturday’s Bring Your Dog to the Ballpark game at 5:05 p.m.    They’ll even have dog food vendors, which is awesome.
