Philly Sports Backwash: Vote Phanatic in 2008!, Phils prospects near, but not in, Philly, Big Brown AND (not in) the Pocono 500

[ ]  The folks at Home Run Derby have a Major League Baseball Mascot Bracket contest, which we just found out about (via Deadspin).  /sigh…

So, here’s the deal: The Phanatic already beat the Red Sox mascot in Round 1.
Just eyeballing the field, the Racing Sausages, Billy The Marlin and the Famous Chicken are the only mascots REMOTELY in The Phanatic’s class, talent-wise. BUT it looks like Fredbird, the Crazy Crab and the Swinging Friar (ha!) are getting out the vote.

Stay tuned and remember...VOTE Phils.

[ ]    Dept. of See the Guys That Will Soon Be Traded for a Veteran Pitcher: The Reading Phillies come to Waterfront Park in Trenton Friday (June 6) for the start of a three-game series against the mascot-hording Trenton Thunder.

The players to watch for the R-Phils: LHP Antonio Bastardo (2-2, 4.09), who starts tonight’s game, and OF Greg Golson, who while leading the team in homers and steals also has struck out 70 times in 226 at bats. As the big-league Phils look to add players near the trade deadline, teams will also be interested in Reading pitchers Carlos Carrasco and Josh Outman (!), who are not scheduled to pitch in this series.

[ ]   While it will certainly be more of a story if, say, Josh Hamilton or Lance Berkman near a baseball triple crown, which hasn’t been done since Yaz did it in 1967, thoroughbred Big Brown goes for horse racing’s Triple Crown, at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday (June 7) at 5 p.m. (6-ABC).  If he wins, he’ll be the first horse to garner the trifecta since Affirmed in 1978.

So, where the hell should you watch the race?

Well, maybe it would be nice to be near a race track, if not AT a race track, so how about Hooters (3620 Street Rd, Bensalem; 215.639.3322) near Philly Park? After all, the national boob-friendly chain just signed an endorsement deal with Big Brown (who already had one with UPS. Really.) (Gawker via NYDN)

Real marketing savvy would be to get Big Brown in a match race against Berkman or Hamilton a NASCAR ride. BEST. RACE. EVER.

[ ]  For those who want to drive two (plus) hours north just to sit in 90 degree heat and watch race cars and stuff, the Pocono 500 is this Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

All joking aside, we’ve heard that the infield parties the night before the race are pretty much a drinkfest. Take pictures and share, folks.
