Endless Campaign: Did ‘bitter’ originate in Levittown?

[ ]   Bucks County Courier Times columnist J.D. Mullane theorizes that Democratic presidential hopeful Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s bitter comment was in reaction to a quote from a Levittown man in an April 6 New York Times story. (Courier Times)

Mullane’s ‘fair and balanced’-style commentary includes the following:

…You may not know that Obama's gaffe — which has him in “homina-homina” mode — was likely prompted by a guy sitting in Gleason's Bar in Levittown on St. Patty's Day.

That guy, Steve Woods, 32, from the Orangewood section, took satisfaction that his words reported by the New York Times had needled Obama, prompting the Illinois senator to make frustrated comments about “bitter” Pennsylvanians to campaign donors in San Francisco….It began when the writer, Levittown ex-pat Mike Sokolove, decided to do a first-person piece for the New York Times on Obama's campaign as it came through Lower Bucks. …the highlight of the piece:

“Steve Woods sat drinking a Coors Light and talking with his buddies. I asked him if the presidential campaign interested him.

“ "Absolutely,' he said. Rapid fire, he told me his top issues: "No. 1, gas prices. It's killing everybody. No. 2, immigrants. They should go back to Mexico. Three, guns. Everybody should have the right to bear arms. In fact, everyone should have a gun in this day and age.' ”…

Mullane then chats with Woods personally to demonstrate how NOT BITTER the man is – not that those words would have EVER seemed to make him sound that way.

Oh - and he meant “illegal’ immigrants, too…
AND he doesn’t own a gun (though everybody should, right?).
And Woods says he's not religious, so savvy Mullane deftly illustrates that Obama must be "out of touch" on that one too.
Whew...thank God for fearless truth-seeking. And for Gleason's.
