[ ] So, more than a week ago, sports blog extraordinaire
Deadspin linked
a post that allowed fans to vote on which song would be the best 8
th Inning Sing-A-Long song for the Mets during the last year of Shea Stadium. (It will be replaced by Citi Field in 2009).
Of course,
Fark helped ‘Rickroll’ the vote: Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”
won. …Sort of: The Mets are
pulling a Hillary Clinton at the convention playing six of the choices during their earliest games and letting
that crowd reaction decide.
While most ballparks, like Citizens Bank Park for instance, typically use “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” as THE sing-a-long in the 7th inning stretch, others use a different song ( the Orioles use John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” the Yankees often use “God Bless America” post-9/11, and the Red Sox use Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”).
You see where we’re going, right?
Maybe the Phils need a song.
NOT one written especially for them (that’s almost sure to suck), but a sensible Philadelphia-flavored song that can stand, perhaps, as their
‘God Bless America’ (Sorry Yanks fans, that’s the real deal.).
The parameters:
- Rated G.
- Easy to sing.
- Short enough to play between innings.
Thinking out loud…The only TSOP song that might work is “Love Train”…and a Met fan openly wondered why they didn’t offer Springsteen’s “Badlands” as a choice…
Hmmmn. We’re going to think on this, ask our friends (that means you)…and if we think we have something that works, we’ll take it to the Phils. Really.

stands-fighters have been in mid-season form at Shea during the Phils-Mets series. (
