Five Must-See Movies at the Philly Film Festival

Cannes my ass: The 17th Philadelphia Film Festival starts tonight (April 3) and runs through April 15. More than 250 films will screen in the less-than-two weeks the festival runs.

Here are our faves:

Young @ Heart: A documentary about a senior citizen chorus who covers Coldplay, Sonic Youth and more.

Electile Dysfunction: City Paper scribe Mary Patel helps this doc take on the 2006 U.S. Senate campaign in Pa. between Bob Casey, Jr. and Rick Santorum.

Universal Signs:  This movie, created by Bucks County natives Ann Calamia and Catherine Miller,  explores modern deaf culture. It is a modern silent film, the first full-length film done in American Sign Language (ASL) and captioned for the hearing. www.universalsignsmovie.com

Richie Ashburn: A Baseball Life: The bio-doc about Whitey makes its world premiere on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the Prince Music Theater. Second screening: April 15, 5 p.m.

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: What was it like before everybody had a tattoo? Find out; includes a take from Philadelphia Eddie.

And don’t forget the indies…

The Savage Breast: Indie shorts including “Why We Love Philadelphia” by Sean Kilroy.
