Summer days of phun

Joe Student / Philly EDGE Editor

Feel free to save this list and use it… just like you do with the phone number of that ex who you’ll screw until you find someone better. – JS

Monday, May 28, 7:05 p.m.

Dollar Dogs
Phillies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Citizens Bank Park (Pattison Ave. Philadelphia)

Kevlar? iPod? Cold fusion reactor?
Sorry. Talk to us when you can launch a frankfurter hundreds of feet in the air.
God bless the air cannon that the Phillie Phanatic uses during Hatfield Phillies Franks Dollar Dog Nights. When our civilization eventually unravels and crumbles, we’ll be best known for blues music, the automobile and the Hot Dog Gun.
One dollar gets you a hot dog. All. Night. Long.

Wednesday, May 30, 4 p.m.

The Golden Ticket
King Tut Exhibit
Franklin Institute (20th and the Parkway, Philadelphia; 1.877.TUT.TKTS)
www2.fi.edu/tut/goldenticket

Why have you put this off so long? It’s not like you can see King Tut all the time.
Money? Aaargh!
Well, your cheap ass is in luck: Tickets to see Tut (Tutckets?) are only $25 from Sunday to Thursday evenings after 4 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day- AND you get to see Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs in IMAX for free.

June

Friday, June 1
First Friday Main Line
Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore

Instead of barreling down to Old City for First Friday, check out this suburban version.
Look, if you really miss the outrageous parking prices, obnoxious happy hour drinkers and overpriced restaurant fare, you can go back next month.

Saturday, June 2
Whack the ball
Wiffle Ball Tournament
Paddy Whacks (9241-43 Roosevelt Blvd. Philadelphia; 215.464.7544)

This is awesome: An all-day wiffle ball tournament ($40 per player; $160 per team) to determine backyard supremacy in NE Philly. The price tag includes draft beer, a T-shirt and a buffet, but who even cares… throw that garbage again, Meat!

Wednesday, June 6

Scream for ice cream
Twistee Treat
Christine's Twistee Treat (3802 Bristol Oxford Valley Rd., Levittown; 215.943.5121)
Collegeville Twistee Treat (3960 Germantown Pike, Collegeville; 610.489.5974)

It was just over a year ago when, after more than 50 years in business, Goodnoe’s of Newtown announced it would close at the end of summer 2006.
That sucked.
Hoist one up in memory today by going to a Twistee Treat. The one in Collegeville even has go-karts, mini golf and a video arcade.

Friday, June 8- Sunday June 10

Race and Run
Philadelphia International Championship / Manayunk Downhill Run
Main Street/ Hills of Manayunk
610.676.0390

While world-class cyclists compete in Sunday’s race, and on the famous Manayunk wall, the real action is during the highly unofficial Manayunk Midnight Suicide Run that happens Saturday night into Sunday.

Sunday, June 10

Film fever
Bucks Fever FilmFest
County Theater (20 East State Street, Doylestown)

The Sixth Annual Bucks Fever FilmFest celebrates the brilliant short films made by emerging, college and high school filmmakers from the area. The best will be on-hand to discuss their work. Call 215.348.3913 for details on films and programs.

Tuesday, June 12, 7:30 p.m.

Welcome mat
WWE Smackdown / ECW
Wachovia Center (3601 Broad Street, Philadelphia; 1.800.298.4200)

Even if you can’t relate to names like Batista, Chris Benoit and RVD, live, nationally-broadcast wrestling is a Philly birthright that goes back from Hulk Hogan to S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones to Bruno Sammartino.

Thursday, June 14, 6 p.m.- 11 p.m.

Lions and tigers and drinks, oh my!
Zoobilee
Philadelphia Zoo (34th and Girard, Philly; 215.243.5225)

This is the 33rd edition of the Zoo's oldest fundraiser. It features live entertainment, animal demonstrations, raffles and food from the area’s finest restaurants…uh…that begs the question: Will they be serving, y’know, meat?
Just sayin’.

Friday, June 15

Four-gasm
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Theaters everywhere

Even if the first one sucked - and it DID - you need to see how Doug Jones (body) and Laurence Fishburne (voice) carry off the Silver Surfer character.
Plus, you get to see Jessica Alba (Sue Storm) walk around for two hours with a bad case of cameltoe. Pass the popcorn.

Wednesday, June 20, or so

The iPhone cometh
AT&T stores nationally

Sometime around this date – Apple is being characteristically dodgy on a firm day – your world will change: Say hello to the iPhone.
Basically, this new phone, which is causing its carrier, AT&T, to “rebrand” its Cingular stores, is a cell phone, iPod and pocket Internet. And it is all touch-screen, just like the MegaTouch at the end of the bar, but without the naughty pictures. Yet.
If you don’t get one right away, your wife/husband will start sleeping with other people, your dog will bite you, and your soul will turn to dust.
Or, your life might not change that all that much.
You never know though.

Saturday, June 23- Sunday, June 24

Artyunk
Manayunk Arts Festival
Main Street, Manayunk; 215.482.9565

Local and national artists will exhibit their work along historic Main Street for this juried art show, which features more than 250 artists showcasing a variety of work, including jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, glass, and mixed media.
The unofficial after-party will feature hundreds of drunken revelers hooking up with people who they might not have slept with if they were sober. Now that’s Surrealism.

Sunday, June 24

Tricked out
DUB Magazine’s Custom Auto Show
Atlantic City Convention Center (2001 Kirkman Blvd., Atlantic City; 609.646.1640)

Car lovers need to get to Atlantic City for this show. In addition to a concert from Lloyd, and Lil Scrappy (who apparently found work after the Scooby cartons ended after all), visitors can see the latest in high-end custom rides and products, celebrity cars, and new car models, including Dodge Nitro and the Alpine Imprint RLS.

Friday, June 29

Sick ticket
Sicko
Theaters everywhere

Some think filmmaker Michael Moore is an irritating, whiny, leftist peckerhead.
He is. The man’s work makes you think.
In Sicko, he probes (ugh) the nation’s healthcare system, which is, maybe, sorta, in need of further examination.

July

Monday, July 2- Saturday, July 7

Fair weather
Southampton Days Fair
Tamanend Park (Between Street Rd. and Bristol Rd. Southampton)

It happens every year around the Fourth of July.
No, not a horrifying fireworks accident that claims fingers or toes: the Southampton Days Fair!
This marks the 36th consecutive year that Bucks residents have come together for pie-eating contests, car shows and, of course, fireworks deployed by trained professionals. Whew.

Wednesday, July 4

Robots in disguise
Transformers
Theaters everywhere

If we have to explain what this movie is about, you’re not going to see it anyway. The point is that Optimus Prime can do everything Spider-Man can do, and then drive across the country with some air conditioners on his back.
Let’s see Spidey do that.

Saturday, July 7

Big kiss
Hersheypark’s 100th Anniversary

Everyone else will be getting married (7-7-07) or going to the real Boardwalk today. No better time to check out Chocolatetown and all its new amenities, including, yes, a Jersey-shore style Boardwalk, as well as all the rides, music and fun.
And there will be fireworks, of course.

Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14

Ball of goop
BlobFest: An Inconvenient Blob
Colonial Theatre (223 Bridge Street, Phoenixville; 610.917.1228)

Some towns shun the movies that have been made inside their borders (you don’t see Newtown hosting SignsFest, do ya?).
Not Phoenixville.
The Montco burg embraces the kitsch with this two-day celebration of an amoebic, gelatinous monster, and the film shot partially in this very theater.

Saturday, July 21

Harry the VII
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Bookstores everywhere

The seventh, and last, Potter book is released on this date.
Who will die? You, if you venture anywhere near a bookstore.

Yards work
Yards Brewing Co. tour
Yards Brewing Co. (2439 Amber St. Philadelphia; 215.634.2600)

You drink enough of the beer; see where it’s made.
FREE tours are available on Saturdays: Noon – 3 p.m. only.
The best line on their Web site:
“PLEASE - no pets in the brewery! We love things with four legs too, (just check out our brewers), but this is a brewery NOT a dog park.”
Wow, Fall Out Boy writes for Yards. Who knew?

Friday, July 27

D’oh nuts, everybody!
The Simpsons: The Movie
Theaters everywhere

You think Tracy Ullman hates God, or maybe just Matt Groening?
The painfully unfunny Brit comedienne’s sketch show helped launch Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Maggie into massive mainstream culture in the late ’80s. This movie will be icing on the cake (or donut).
For kicks, head on out to Springfield Township, Montgomery County or Springfield, Delaware County to see which one is more like the Springfield on the show. (Considering the proximity of the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant, the guess is MontCo.)

Monday, July 30

Birds come back
Eagles Training Camp
Lehigh University, Bethlehem

By this date, both rookies, like Kevin Kolb, and veterans, like Donovan McNabb, will have reported to Lehigh. This marks the 12th year the Birds have made their preseason nest there.
The first preseason game is August 13 in Baltimore.

August

Sunday, August 5, 8 a.m.

Rox city
She Rox Philadelphia Triathlon

This event – .8K (.5 mile) swim/25K (15.5 mile) bike/5K (3.1 mile) run – is just for women. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Thursday, August 9, 7:05 p.m.

Singles hitters
Phillies vs. Florida Marlins
Citizens Bank Park (Pattison Ave. South Philadelphia)

Rooftop Thursdays, which are huge parties above Ashburn Alley during all home Thursday Phillies’ games, don’t even really need to be more special than they are.
But this one is. August 9 is Singles Night.
And they will have the mechanical bull out.

Friday, August 17, 8 p.m.

Singing, and seeing, stars
Rufus Wainwright with Neko Case
Mann Center (52nd & Parkside Ave., Philadelphia; 215.893.1999)

Beautiful people; beautiful voices; beautiful setting.

Thursday, August 23

Take a ride
Bike night
Montana West (1030 N West End Blvd., Quakertown; 215.529.6070)

Soon it will be time for both the Lansdale and Bristol Bike Nights. Get primed by heading to this club in Quakertown. Every Thursday its Bike Night features a $9.95 all-you-can-eat pig roast, and free admission to the club if you come on a bike. (We’re talking motorcycles here; show up on a ten-speed and they may beat you to death.)

Sunday, August 26, 1 p.m.

Party at the beach
Wildwood Block Party and Music Festival (Fox Park, Wildwood; 609.522.2444)

Just in case you haven’t gotten to the beach by this date, Wildwood gives you one more chance.
