The Brotherly SHOVE Fest!

18 to Enter, 21 to Drink
2006-07-21 18:30
Etc/GMT+4

Oh brother, where's thou art?
Between July 6 and July 9, at the very least?

What happens when a city's biggest independent booking agent meets a city's biggest independent club at the peak of a city's new found popularity during that independent town's celebration of Independence?
You get a little Brother Shove.

That's what it is when Joseph Mahoney's Songspot LLC entertainment group heads into the (how many seat) Trocadero for the first (but not last) annual Brotherly Shove Festival of bands, Comediens, independant promoters, and more mere days after Philadelphia - birthplace of liberty, yo celebrates the Fourth of July.

Cradle that!
Sponsored by independent radio rocker WMMR 93.3-FM with nods from Philadelphia CityPaper (celebrating twenty five years of independent journalism), you'll find that there's a whole load of freedom out and about when it comes to Brotherly Shove.

But none more than what freedom will get represented on stage during the four day Shove.

"This is my biggest festival showcase, ever," says Mahoney, the Songsport.org creator who has booked (before and since-the-Spot) punks and funkateers into Philadelphia rooms small ( J.C Dobbs, Pontiac, Tritone, Bar Noir), mid-size ( Abilene), big (The North Star) and really big (Theater of the Living Arts) before this Brotherly Shove event. "This is the biggest festival I think I've ever seen where local bands - doing their thing, just playing - is concerned. And I couldn't think of a better time for it what with tourism at its hugest and our notoriety at its highest."

Local bands who've slipped through the cracks of the usual hype is Mahoney and Sonspot.org's milieu. And finding bands who create community beyond themselves just sweetens the deal.

Likening himself and his grassroots army to Robin Hood and the Merrie Men without the funny leotards (Ok, some of Songspot has leotards!), Mahoney's Songspot deliver great bands with great underground followings to whatever venue needs him. And then those bands tell other venues and those venues hire. And so on . And so on.

"We help those who help others," says Mahoney.

Need a punk band with an earnest storyteller? Blue Collar. A roots jam-hop act? Simple & Supreme. A rude wigga comic? Danny Ozark. "Need a rhyme for orange? We have one at Songspot."

And if those band filled the club they hit and they did and you loved the, you'll tell another venue. Or find another artist looking for a great opening act. Or another press person looking to write about the next big thing.

No matter what you collaborated and unified, rather than divide and conquer each other.

"I'm tired of battle of band things," says Mahoney. "I want bands to unite, to eliminate competition, to support and promote each other."

That gang mentality for the good and not the band gets ramped up for the Brotherly Shove Festival at The Trocadero, 10 th & Arch, between Thursday July 6 and Sunday July 9.

A free, intimate pre-festival Songspot.org meet-and-greet for Mahoney and the bands occurs Monday, July 3, at Bar Noir, 112 S.18th at 9 pm in the shadow of the Art Museum fireworks.

Each night as hosted by WMMR radio personality Jaxon, is separated by genre:

July 6 is Alternative rock. July 7 is Jam band/Hippie Hop night. July 8 is Powerpop and punk. July 9 is metal.

Those are the only divisions to be found at Brotherly Shove. Outside of those, it's one for all and all for one.

Look for the Brotherly Shove Festival to become a yearly gathering of groups local, national and international if this one succeeds as it should. This year alone, punks from Japan (Peelanderz), one-man Neil Diamond cover bands (Dirty Diamond) and fashion-forward thrash metal (Live Not on Evil) threaten to shake the ages-old Trocadero to its foundations. Also many over 21 after Partys including a Crash, Bang b, Boom event featuring ole school Punk Mikey Wild , The Phantom Drifters and Philly's favorite psychedelic jam bands Caveman, and Felix Sarco

It's that next-level of cooperation, co-habitation and scene unity that Songspot.org and the Brotherly Shove Festival is looking to achieve.

Take heed. Promote wisely and liberally.

And stay free.

Peace and Respect
