Two Artists Two Views:
Vivian Bergenfeld and Evelyn Liebowitz

June 9 - July 14, 2006
Sunday, June 25, 2-4pm: Opening Reception
An exhibition of the work of two remarkable artists, both of whom were long time members of Cheltenham Art Center. Bergenfeld and Liebowitz both had a passionate love of their craft, and their work expressed their own adventures into their personal visions of the world. Bergenfeld’s intellectual paintings and prints were drafted with precision, while Liebowitz’s linocuts gravitated toward simplified black and white shapes of what she saw in the world around her.

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 10:00 pm

Reelblack, Philadelphia’s only ongoing film series dedicated to the promotion
and preservation of “Good Movies ‘Bout Black Folks” celebrates
Black Music Month with the Philly Premiere of THE ART OF 16 BARS. This is the
latest film from producer Quincy Jones III (QD 3) and director Peter Spirer.

The Art of 16 Bars: It is raw, blistering talent that defines the legendary
MCs. But going from hungry amateur to rich professional takes more... much more!
From the filmmakers who brought you The MC: Why We Do It, Beef, Beef II, The
Freshest Kids and Rhyme and Reason, learn from the biggest MCs of our time exactly
how they achieved success. They share their approach to live performances and
how they put together a demo tape, got signed and dealt with labels as well
as their hard-won behind-the-scenes knowledge about how the industry really
works.

OPEN AIR THEATRE PRESENTATION OF “THE LAST FIVE YEARS"
IS THE LITTLE MUSICAL THAT COULD!

Written by Tony-winner Jason Robert Brown, TL5Y (as it is known by its legions of fans) is a testatment to the power of the human heart in more ways than one. A musical love story spanning five years, the show examines the joys and heartaches of a contemporary couple who celebrate and grapple with a story as old as time. Their journey will resonate with everyone, reminding us that it truly is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
The unusual and creative structure of TL5Y is a musical breath of fresh air for theatre lovers. First, the same story is told simultaneously from two completely different points of view, his and hers. But then writer Brown adds an even more intriguing twist. The story unfolds at opposite ends of the spectrum of time. For the male character of Jamie, the story begins on the night of a first date, and moves forward in time. For the character of Cathy, the play begins with the breakup of her five -year relationship with Jamie, and moves progressively backwards to the night of that first date.
The Last Five Years is funny, insightful and heartbreaking - it weaves its spell with a six-piece string ensemble accompanying the show's ballads, comic novelty numbers and eloquent musical narrative. It opens June 15th and runs thru June 24, playing Thursday thru Saturday the first week, and Wednesday thru Saturday the second week. Showtime is 8pm; for ticket information call (609)737-1826 or visit www.njoat.com

Described by Revolver as “swaggering rock n’ roll that has no time for sensitivity-training courses or painfully earnest emotions” and by Kings of A&R as “one of those bands that would make Angus Young (AC/DC) and W. Axl Rose smile” Danko Jones have constructed a brand of muscular yet melodic rock n’ roll that have critics from Vice to SPIN singing their praises. NME even raved that Danko Jones “might just be the best band in the world.” The band is touring in support of their upcoming album "Sleep is the Enemy."

Comic Energy Sketch Comedy Troupe, based in South Philadelphia will perform “Comic Energy Does America”, June 29th thru July 2nd at the Shubin Theatre.

The show will take a look at the history of America with Comic Energy’s take on some of the more important events during the birth of America, the transformation of America and some highlights through history that Comic Energy tabs as noteworthy.

A typical ingredient at any Comic Energy show would be the most unexpected ending to many of their sketches, as C.E. goes where you wouldn’t expect them to go. This has paralleled them to the likeness of comedy giant “Second City” of Chicago.
