News to Reuse (Northern Liberites edition): Assault on PBR, Rooftop Hop and Dr. Dog is America’s next great band

Convergence, synergy, confluence, clusterfuck…maybe it was the pizza we had at Rustica. Anyway, we’re somehow overrun with news just north of Old City.

[ ]  Graffiti-like ads for Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and Colt 45 malt liquor in Queen Village, Fishtown, and Kensington are in violation of zoning ordinance, a community group claims.
(KYW 1060) (UPDATE: Now with video from Philly.com)

From the story:

…"The most appropriate way to refer to them is as 'fake murals' and 'fake graffiti,' because what it is is illegal advertising," Nicole Seitz with the community activist group SCRUB (Society Created to Reduce Urban Blight) said….

Mary Tracy, executive director of SCRUB, said they are particularly offensive in a city known for murals of famous places and people, from Frank Sinatra to Malcolm X….

Fwiw- Philly EDGE finds cute-acronym-y-organizations pretty goddamned offensive too.

[ ]   A two-hours-long meeting yesterday at Higher Grounds Café (631 North 3rd St.
Philadelphia; 215.922.3745) revealed two important facts:

1-     Coffee always tastes better in a porcelain mug.
2-     If we had a bathroom as interesting as theirs, we’d be tempted to develop IBS, an enlarged prostate or at least a more serious reading habit.

[ ]   Checked out the Philadelphia Weekly Rooftop Hop at Hancock Square. It was just like this.

Pretty sweet: free eats, beer and access to a building with no even floors. And they were giving away pets on the way out, we think.

[ ]   No tour of all things No. Libs and Fishtown would be complete without a visit to Philebrity.com and a post on some guy who has 50,000 sex partners. (Philebrity)

[ ]   Barack Obama and Mayor Nutter has nothing on Dr. Dog, the Philly band who graces the cover of the latest Relix with the headline: America’s Next Great Band.

Maybe they can open for Coldplay?…uh, maybe not.
