i think everyone is missing the big picture here, even Tom Taylor from the trade magazine. The void will be filled with crap, the same crap that they force on you: commercials and censored talk and music.

Even Though Howard Sterns Show will suck,(if you have full freedom to talk about anything you want how long will people tune in to hear him complain and tell everyone he invented everything) he will still draw people away and once people realize how great satellite radio is, the regular radio stations will suffer more and more

Tom Taylor said:
"XM and Sirius know they've got a relatively short window to work with, before the Internet washes over their business model.…Cities like Philadelphia are charging ahead with cheap universal access to the entire Internet. Why pay $12.95 a month just for 120-130 proprietary audio streams when you can get the vast menu of the Internet?”
Well i really don't think that a lot of people will have Internet service in their cars and trucks, and with the nightmare it is driving in the Philly area, people spend a lot of time in their cars driving to or driving for their jobs.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's you could find a ton of people that would refuse to pay for cable TV. "Its too expensive" , but now if not uncommon for your cable or Dish bill be at least 50 bucks a month, But $12.95 is expensive? Well, cable TV for the radio is here; its called Satellite Radio. People got cable TV for the reasons that there were so few stations and very little variety. Satellite is the same thing. There are so many different channels and styles of music, talk and comedy to listen to, and with almost unlimited range how can anyone say that it wont last?

As far as the alternative for Howard Stern, What choices do we have? A bunch of hack DJ's doing hacky material that can't say what they want or do what is actually funny because of fear of fines from the FCC. All of that surrounded by Music and commercials. NO THANK YOU.

Do i really get to Listen to a washed up hair-band lead singer telling stories about sex drugs and rock and roll?? Oh wait he cant talk about sex and very little about drugs so what's left? One maybe two days of stories that happened 20 years ago? But if you do switch to Sirius and listen to Howard what do you get? He cant play his old stuff that is owned by his old company that doesn't seem willing to hand it over for free. He can only complain about his old company, G.W. Bush and the FCC for so long. So now hes forced to actually do a real show for the first time in 10 years. All this on a company that makes bad decisions(Martha Stewart) and overpays everyone. who will pay for Stern's half a billion dollar paycheck, and Martha Stewart's 7 Million price tag. Martha cant keep a TV show afloat, but she'll do good with a radio show?? i don't think so.
What's left has already been done for over a year by Opie and Anthony On XM. Which have been rebuilding a strong audience with what has been lacking in radio: Uncensored comedy that is VERY funny and entertaining EVERYDAY!

So if you like listening to the same censored songs played over and over mixed with commercials that no one listens to (or cares about) and hack DJ's that are worse than the commercials, then regular radio is perfect for you. But this is 2005 and the new radio is here.
Its called XM Satellite Radio
