Whether it’s Ron Wood and Charlie Watts nicely rounding out the bluesy-rock sound of the Rolling Stones or Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley providing jazzy depth for the Dave Matthews Band, most musical groups are only as impressive as their members.
With the release of her full-length debut disc “The Sex Album” later this week (Oct. 15), Abington native Jessica Vale gives that adage a new meaning.
Vale, 27, and boyfriend (and album co-producer) Ivan Evangelista recorded the various sounds produced by seven different couples who were engaged in sexual activities. The duo, along with sound designer Jean-Luc Cohen, then manipulated the many sounds -from a hand slapping bare flesh to a heart beating at an increased rate- into bass, drum and melodic tracks to which Vale later added vocals.
“It started over a drink or two, just us thinking it would be interesting to compose music made of (the sounds of) sex,” Vale said. “Once we talked about it enough we really thought that we could pull it off, so we decided to try it.”
The result is an 11-track disc whose sounds, while dark, industrial and ambient, give little clue to their origin.
“It doesn’t sound like a porn soundtrack. The point of (the album), was NOT to do something as obvious as that,” Vale said. She and Evangelista, who has worked in production with artists such as Cyndi Lauper, decided to move forward on the full-length CD after a limited edition version sold out earlier this year.
“We put (the limited edition) out as an experiment, not to reach a mass market,” Vale said. “Then it blew up.”
