Saturday on the Piazza

Posted by joe_student

After rain pissed on the Popped!/2nd Street Music Festival a few weeks back, the folks at Philebrity had to scramble to reschedule their Sync Stage at the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties for Saturday, July 4 from 2 p.m.- 9 p.m.

And, given the forecast for Saturday, the lineup which includes Black Landlord, The Capitol Years, BC Camplight and more and that it is all FREE and within a short walk of  Independence Hall, it’s hard to imagine 10 better ways to spend the Fourth in Philly.

Step. Away. From. That. Grill.

Think about it: No shopping. No charcoal. No fire extinguisher.

On July 3 and 4, Chef Alison Barshak is grilling at Alison two in Fort Washington. Chicken, burgers, Hendrick's Farm Grass Fed Beef hot dogs, corn and more is just $4 each. Sundaes and strawberry shortcake will be available for dessert. In addition, Red, White and Blue Sangria will also be available. More info at Alisontwo.

Your Thursday: Leave. Work. Now.

Punk rock and roll Fourth of July in Philadelphia

Posted by McG

Patriotic punk rockers take note: There are two good opportunities to celebrate the Fourth.

Firstly, new wave/punk melodic master Jay Reatard plays Johnny Brenda's.

Reatard has a new album coming out on Matador, "Watch Me Fall," sure to be full of pogo-worthy punk ditties and late '70s and early '80s new wave type jams.

His opening act is T.V. Smith, whose band The Adverts released the under appreciated punk LP, "Crossing the Red Sea With the Adverts," back in 1978.

Secondly, in homage to hardcore matinees of yesteryear, there's an afternoon show with Leftover Crack and The Casualties at the Starlight Ballroom.

Expect lots of crusty punks, insane thrashers and perhaps even a mohawk or two for that show.

Crows, Crowes to play AC on consecutive days

Posted by Joe_student

Love it when a plan comes together.

The Counting Crows, playing with Michael Franti and Spearhead and Augustana will precede the Black Crowes, with Levon Helm Band (!) on consecutive weekend days, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28 and 29, at Borgata’s Event Center in Atlantic City. Tickets for the former go on sale July 4 at 10 a.m.; Black Crowes tix are already on sale.

While neither band has been touring on new material - the Crowes are releasing new studio record Before the Frost...Until the Freeze on Sept. 1 - both are solid bets to deliver energetic performances in a smaller venue than usual.

Near the beach. In the summer. On consecutive days. … What the hell are you waiting for?

For a sense of what the shows may be like, check out the Crows’ Across A Wire: Live In New York City and The Black Crowes - Freak N Roll into the Fog.

StreetTalkin’ looking for hosts…and Philly wives

Posted by joe_student

“Philadelphia’s internet video channel” StreetTalkin.com, the video-heavy Web site with a veiled connection to the local Clear Channel radio station cluster (Q-102, Radio 104.5, etc.) is holding an open casting call for hosts to staff its in-depth profiles of events this Tuesday, July 7. The qualifications listed on their craigslist post do not present insurmountable hurdles for applicants.

…Male or Female ages 27 - 35. Must be comfortable approaching strangers on the street to talk about lifestyle, personal and hot topic questions. Please bring resume and headshot….

Thankfully “hot topic” is NOT capitalized. One can only ask so many questions like “Which hair dye goes with these skinny jeans?”

More importantly, StreetTalkin is also airing video of the cast of the My 106.1 FM contest “True Philly Wives,” the reality TV rip-off that someone locally surely should have embraced before now. In this instance, women like Ceri (in pic) tell their stories in sound bites amidst quick cutting graphics and effects and we all pretend not to feel excessively self-aware for them.

Give the gift of food

Posted by Kaytie Dowling

I am very into giving food as gifts, and I'm always trying to find a new way to do it. I love the idea behind The Essential "Taste of Mexico" Sampler.

Here's how the site explains it:

"The totally affordable gift for that person on your list who is curious about Mexican cuisine. Sample two tasty, tropical Mexican drinks. Serve up one of two typical, native desserts. Try different types of chiles, and delve into an array of five salsas, hot sauces and mole sauce. Flavor up your meals with authentic tomato/chicken bouillon! Enjoy Mexican candies and cookies. This is a unique gift pack that will delight its recipients, sending them right into the kitchen-where they're certain to be on their way to becoming genuine Mexican chefs!"

German on South

Posted by Kaytie Dowling

If you're near South Street, stop what you're doing and go to Brauhaus Schmitz. Seriously. Now. Go there.

It's authentic German food, complete with brauts and goulash that would make my grandmother proud. But it also has a huge selection of German beer. I'm a huge fan of wheat beer, and I spend a lot of time drinking brews like Blue Moon. But the brews I sampled at the bar were far, far better than that Belgian beer.

And if you want to show off your German skills, you'll be sure to find a few people there who can help. Our waitress not only greeted us in German, but took orders and had some conversation in the language. I was impressed.

Check it out!

Explosions in the Sky to open for Flaming Lips

Posted by McG

If you're planning on catching the Flaming Lips when they play Philadelphia on August 29 at Pier Festival at Penn's Landing, you're in for a treat.

Austin, TX's Explosions in the Sky have been named as the opening act.

If you're not familiar with EITS, think long jammy instrumentals that start off quiet and build to an ear-crackling crescendo.

In some ways, they are the poor man's Mogwai (the band that pretty much mastered the elementary instrumental post-rock sound).

EITS did the music for Friday Night Lights, which gave them critical acclaim and a seeming free pass.

Unless you're a hardcore indie rock fan, you'll probably be too busy getting a beer to catch EITS, which is probably OK.

But if you are a fan of the meandering, trippy, sonic walls of sound interspersed with soft musical passages, then get yourself to the show early.
